Summer School discover scarce beetle
9 September 2021
Fairfield High School held a summer school in August 2021 and one of the sessions was the Hidden Herefordshire team who instructed the year 7 and 8s in identifying wildlife.
Over 50 species were identified over the day. Probably the highlight was the discovery of the Net-winged Beetle Platycis minutus. This is a striking beetle whose larvae feed on rotten hard woods emerging in the summer to mate.
Several students commented that it was the best thing that week and the records will feed into the School’s understanding of their Outdoor classroom space.
