School Children find rare Woodlouse

On a visit to Brampton Wood a group of children find a rare woodlouse

Madley Primary School often use a local woodland for their outdoor classroom. On the 7th October they partake in a ‘Teaching Trees’ session provided by the Royal Forestry Society. On this particular day they were investigating the invertebrate fauna of the wood and came across a woodlouse. It turned out to be the newly discovered species in Britain; Philoscia affinis which is very similar to the Common Striped Woodlouse Philoscia muscorum. Technically to be sure a male’s leg needs to be examined to be sure but it looks like Herefordshire is at the forefront of woodlouse discoveries with 8 and 9 year olds leading the way!
