Rare Hair Ice found by Volunteer

Hair Ice is a rare find indeed. It can only be formed when conditions are cold but with moist air and moist wood. Up until 2015 scientists didn’t really know how it was formed until they realized that a specific fungus Exidiopsis effusa allowed the ice crystals to grow around 0.01mm in diameter. The specimen was found by a keen naturalist at Gilfach nature reserve in Radnorshire on the 17th January 2022.
