Pine Martens in Herefordshire?
23 August 2022
The Pine Marten (Martes martes) was once a familiar sight across the UK. However during the 18th and 19th centuries it declined dramatically due to habitat loss and predator control. It survived in pockets, particularly in Scotland and Wales, and recently the Vincent Wildlife Trust together with Gloucestershire Wildlife Trust reintroduced the marten to the Forest of Dean. Given how close it is to Herefordshire surely it isn’t long before the first authenticated Herefordshire sighting. Those with camera traps please be vigilant and send in those records!
