Millipede discovered with over 1000 legs

As their name would suggest Millipedes have 1000 legs right? Well until recently not at all – although they have a lot (2 pairs per segment) there hasn’t been a species in the world with over 1000 until now. Its name is  Eumillipes persephone and it was found in Western Australia 60m below the surface in an exploratory mine! It lacks eyes and pigment (why would it need it?) and has roughly 1306 legs. Species in the UK and elsewhere have between 40 and 400 dependant on species. Find out more on our course in March 2020.
