Clanger discovered in the UK
31 January 2023

Shrews can be tricky to identify and even observe in the first place. We have no idea about how many Water Shrews there are in the UK and now we may have a new species of shrew discovered in Sunderland. Recent DNA work has confirmed that the Greater White Toothed Shrew (Crocidura russula) is new to England. Populations are known in Ireland. It can be distinguished from other shrews by the fact that it looks like ‘Finger mouse’ or a Clanger, though for those born after a certain time these references are largely redundant!
