Expected outcomes

The course aims to familiarize participants with the diversity of bryophytes and teach the simple skills required to record of easily identifiable species or species groups. It will focus on making this taxa group more accessible to non-experts.

Outline of day

Introductions.
A short talk ca.1 hour covering;
What are bryophytes
Why are they important
Species diversity
Key morphological features used for identification
Brief outline of species groups
Brief outline of bryophyte habitats
Identification resources (key books, on-line resources etc)
Use of hand lens/ microscope

Local walk search and talk
Focus would be on finding and identifying around 30 common species
